In addition to the Group’s majority owned Clubs, CFG has a number of minority shareholdings, affiliations and associations with teams around the world.

YOKOHAMA F. MARINOS

City Football Group were announced as a minority shareholder of the Yokohama F. Marinos (YFM) in May 2014, providing access to CFG’s training methods, medical care, sport science, team management and coaching know-how.

The partnership between Nissan Motors, the majority owners of YFM, and CFG marked the first significant foreign investment in a J-League Club.

Yokohama F. Marinos were founded in 1972 as Nissan Motors FC before changing their name to Yokohama Marinos in 1993. The Club was one of the founding members of the J-League in 1991. Managed by Erick Mombaerts, the Club play at the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama.

CLUB ATLETICO TORQUE

City Football Group invested in Uruguayan football Club Atletico Torque in April 2017. Founded in 2007 and known simply as Torque, the team plays at Estadio Jose Nasazzi in Montevideo. Within the first 12 months under CFG ownership, the team was promoted to the Uruguayan Primera Division for the first time in its history.

This investment enables CFG to build on existing connectivity in the country and helps to expand the currently limited options for identifying and developing local Uruguayan and South American talent.

It also acts as an administrative hub for City’s pre-existing scouting operations in the region and represents City Football Group’s first footprint in South America.

GIRONA FC

In August 2017, City Football Group, together with Girona Football Group, acquired Spanish football club Girona FC in an equal partnership deal (44.3% by each party). Girona won promotion to La Liga for the first time in its history in May 2017, having reached the play-offs three times in the previous four season.

Girona FC’s future on- and off-field potential, together with a positive academy track record, contributed significantly to the rationale for the new investment by both stakeholders and represents positive foundations upon which to stabilise and grow their ambition to become a well-established La Liga member.
