In August 2017, City Football Group, together with Girona Football Group, acquired Spanish football club Girona FC in an equal partnership deal (44.3% by each party).

Girona have been promoted to the Primera División for the second time after having been close to this objective in the two previous play-offs. The club, which was founded in 1930, has experienced the best period in its history coinciding with the entry of City Football Group when promotion to Primera (2017) was achieved. The team had one of the best debuts in LaLiga, finishing in tenth position, but the following year they were relegated to Segunda with 10 games to go when they were practically saved. In the following two seasons, promotion escaped in the last play-off match at Montilivi. But honouring one of the legends of the city ("Girona, thrice immortal"), they have ended up making the dream of returning to the top flight a reality.

Girona FC's future on- and off-field potential, together with a positive academy track record, contributed significantly to the rationale for the new investment by both stakeholders. The consolidation in the First Division, the construction of a Sports City, the renovation of the Montilivi stadium and the development of talent are the foundations for the future.
